Board Candidates

Carol Van Der Woude
I have been married to Dan for 36 years. God has blessed us with four children, one already with the Lord. Our oldest daughter, Sara, is married and has four children. Our second daughter, Julia, is married, expecting their first child. Julia’s twin brother battled leukemia for two years. God walked with us through that difficult time and demonstrated His love for us, even as Steven passed into eternal life. Our youngest, Joel, attends VCB from time to time. He is currently a graduate student at the University of Michigan.

Our family began attending VCB in 1998 and we became members in 2003. Over the years I have been involved in children’s ministries and adult ministries. I have served in Awana (Sparks), Vacation Bible School and Junior Church. I have been a co-coordinator for Baby & Me and a leader of a discipleship group. I am currently a mentor mom for MOPS. Since our first year at VCB I have participated in the precept Bible study. It is a blessing to spend time in the Word with fellow believers. My husband and I enjoy being part of a small group.

I was born in Danville, Indiana.  Accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior when I was 10 years old at Danville Friends Meeting.  Graduated from Trinity College where I met my wife, Tanya. We have been married for 24 years and have three children, Max III (Jr. @ Anderson Univ., Sean & Brooke (Sr. & Fr. @ Dundee Crown H.S.).  We have lived in Algonquin for the past 22 years. I work for GE and have been with them for 21 years doing commercial financing.

I started attending VCB in 1984 when I was in high school.  I have served as Deacon of Children’s Ministries for six years and am presently Chairman for our Global Impact Team.
Our family has had the privilege of going on two short-term missions trips (Ecuador 2008 & New Orleans 2013).

I enjoy gardening and collecting root beer.  My favorite Dad moment was hearing my seven year old son lead his four year old brother to Christ. My favorite passage of scripture is Psalm 1.

Byron Smythe
I live in Lake Zurich with my best friend and wife of twelve years, Jen, and our two little ones at home: CJ, our daughter (age five), and Ben, our little man (age three).  We also have a daughter in heaven—Molly, who we lost in August 2012, just weeks before her due date.  The outpouring of love, support, and prayer we received from VCB during that season cemented our already strong conviction that we wanted to plant our roots deep here.

We’ve been attending VCB since the winter of 2011.  I’ve had the privilege of volunteering with Awana Cubbies, serving four and five year olds in our Children’s Ministry once a month during Saturday services, and helping with the Heritage Financial Ministry.

My parents led me to faith in Jesus Christ at age eight, and it’s been my deepest joy to grow in fellowship with Him since then.  I’m a walking testimony of the life-transforming power of the gospel in the lives of children! I would count it a great honor to serve alongside CFM’s hard-working leaders and volunteers in pointing VCB’s little ones toward our gracious Lord Jesus.

I was led to the Lord in college by a gentleman named Roy Schwartz.  Lindsay and I have been attending VCB since the end of 2003. We have four children (Marie (eight), Evangeline (six), Anthony (four) and John (three)).  Some of the areas that I have been privileged to serve in at VCB are: Connecting ministries, Worship ministries, Children and Family ministries (CFM), Small Group Leader and serving on the VCB Board as Deacon of CFM for the last four years.
